This is one of two LINC sections, which will collaborate with Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur and a variety of NGO community partners such as Healthcare Sansthan, Development Alternatives, UNICEF, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Students will communicate with partners in India throughout the semester to develop projects that help address social and environmental issues in Jaipur and surrounding areas.

There is potential for a group of students in this section to participate in an international service-learning trip during spring break. Participation in the trip is not a requirement for the course; students would be responsible for procuring finances for trip participation (e.g., personal finances, travel scholarships, fundraising).

Swatch Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission)

Problem/Opportunity: Consuming unsafe drinking water and improper sanitary practices are causes of major diseases. The goal of the Total Sanitation Campaign is to improve the general quality of life in rural areas.

Potential Activities and Projects: Develop performance indicators and methods to measure the tangible impact of sanitation campaigns in relation to their benefits and people’s satisfaction with the program, including evaluation of intangible health benefits in monetary terms.

Fluorosis and Defluoridation

Problem/Opportunity: Drinking water with a high fluoride concentration can lead to loss of teeth at early ages, stunted growth in children as well as bone diseases. With 70% of the population in the state of Rajasthan dependent on groundwater, which can have high fluoride concentrations, this is a major public health problem.

Potential Activities and Projects: Develop tools and protocols to assess the magnitude of the fluorosis problem on communities and work with stakeholders to develop a pilot scale defluoridation system and carry out short dietary interventions. Develop a funding proposal for taking research on this technology to the next level.

Water Treatment Interventions in Schools

Problem/Opportunity: Different water treatment interventions like UV, Ultrafiltration, Nano filtration, and R.O.-based disinfection units have been installed in various schools in Punjab.

Potential Activities and Projects: Develop performance indicators for assessing the success of programs and their long-term sustainability, including evaluation of intangible health benefits in monetary terms.
